Very pleased

First of all, this is my first Ariens mower. Previously, I have owned Craftsman, Toro and Lawn Boy (both 2 and 4 cycle engined) mowers. Every mower I have owned has had good points and some idiosyncrasies that could be irritating. I purchased this mower based on recommendation of my local small engine shop. I have used this mower for approximately 3 months mowing as a bagger and as a mulcher of both grass and leaves. I think I have a good handle on its pros and cons. I am very pleased with the mower overall. The housing is heavy gauge stamped steel. By heavy, I mean it is at least twice as thick as what is used on the low priced units in the major chain stores. The engine is a Lorcin OHV. It starts on the first or second pull every time whether hot or cold, has good power and seldom bogs down even with a full bag and going uphill. The single lever height adjustment is a great idea. It is the best bagging mower I have owned. The vacuuming action is excellent and the bag has a large capacity and fills completely. The handle adjustment allows the handle to easily be raised to 90 degrees so the bag is easy to remove and replace. It does get a bit "tippy" when the bag is full but not as much as other rear baggers I have owned. The cut is very smooth with very few straggler grass blades. It seems to get better gas "mileage" than my old Lawn Boy. It mows faster than I'm accustomed to - you can mow at a normal walking speed and still get a good cut. Mulching is very good to excellent. The clippings are chopped very fine and clumping is minimal. If the grass is tall or wet, it does have a tendency to leave some visible clippings at the end of a pass or when making a turn. Mulching leaves works fine. The only criticism is that it tends to blow some of the clippings and leaves out the front just ahead of the right front wheel. This is not a problem unless the wind is blowing from the left and the leaves/clippings are blown to the side where the mower doesn't get them. I have used the side discharge very little, but it seems to work fine though the deflector is difficult to attach. I cannot comment on durability, but it appears well made from quality components. Now for the nit-picking. It is a heavy mower. I didn't weigh it, but based on lifting it out of my van (fully assembled) it felt heavier than my old Lawn Boy when I lifted it to haul it to the scrap yard. I'm guessing about 90 - 100 pounds for the Ariens vs 75 - 80 pounds or so for the Lawn Boy. It also feels heavier when using it. That makes it a bit harder to maneuver than my old Lawn Boy. It is not a quiet running engine (maybe a better muffler?). The speed control is a single lever on the right hand side of the handle and takes a bit of getting used to. The first time I used the mower, I squeezed the lever too hard and the mower took off like a scared rabbit. The lever is also hard to reach and control when making a sharp left turn or doing a 180 to the left. I would recommend Ariens engineers design a double lever control so it can be reached easily with either hand (the south-paws will appreciate that as well). It has a guard to protect the transmission (good idea). The problem is that it protrudes below the cutting height. The guard/transmission is under the left rear corner of the mower. If you set the mower much below 3 inches height, the guard will drag in the turf and you lose traction if you're mowing over some rough ground or when mowing along the edge of a sidewalk or driveway. You either have to mow with the guard over the sidewalk or driveway and not on the grass or mow with the right side wheels of the mower on the concrete and the guard well away from the edge of the turf. You need to be careful when installing the bag as it will fall off if you don't get it firmly in the mounting slots. The side discharge chute is difficult to attach. Last, the mulching plug for the bagging chute lets a few clippings slip by it and collect between the plug and the flap that covers the chute. That gets dumped in the driveway or on the lawn when you change from mulch to bag.

J.CREW + VERIDATTA on JULY 18th

Posted by Rebecca Underdown on

Worthiness. One of my least favorite words in the English language. Why? Because every time I see that word I feel the complete opposite of it. It does not bring any sense of worthiness, it brings a sense of unworthiness.

Our culture is going through a huge transformation that is obsessed with the idea of worthiness. Veridatta believes in finding the feeling of worthiness but the reason for this post is to introduce a new way to engage the feeling and it is not going to be what you expect.

A lack of worthiness is a feeling that comes into play when you are looking at your current reality and using it as a way to judge how you are doing in the game of life. It is a vicious cycle because if you look at what and you don't like it then a natural step is to think, I must be unworthy of my desires or, I am doing something incredibly wrong that is creating this. Gone are the days in which we blame others for our reality right? If you're still doing that then the rest of this isn't going to make much sense.

When everything is not going according to plan, we question ourselves, what we deserve, and we stand there almost asking someone else to show us our value. Show me I am worthy we say quietly under our breath. Unfortunately, it usually only gets worse from there. The biggest take away if you remember nothing else from this blog it is this: We don't question our worthiness when everything is going our way. Why? Because there is no time to! We are having far too much fun! When everything is going the way we want we stand in a place of pure knowing. In that place of pure knowing there is no room left for doubt or question and we sure as hell don't ask our neighbor in those moments if we are worthy.

Think about it. When do you find yourself reading the instagram quotes about how worthy you are? Monday morning before work? In the waiting room at the doctor's office? We sure as shit don't read worthy quotes when we are on a three day weekend sipping champagne at The Ritz Carlton. When we are in the experience of happiness there is no questioning our sense of value. There is only the experience and the feeling of truth.

Next time you find yourself reading a feel good excerpt about your worthiness, ask yourself this: Is this making me feel better about myself or worse? If it is better, by all means keep reading. But while there are two sides to every coin and while you may think you are looking at one side of the coin, often you are feeling the other side of the coin. Or in better words, the act of stating to yourself that you ARE something often feels more like you are NOT that something.

I specifically chose "You Are Enough" to be the words to represent Veridatta's message because in those words a feeling of relief and ease softens the heart. We are not telling you to try harder, to be more, or to change anything about yourself. Veridatta is the symbol that reminds people to take a big breath of relief. That all is well with the world even if it is not all ok. We want you to be ok inside even if there are things around you that you don't like. We want you to be steady in your knowing about your value even when things are not perfect around you. If you can stop the questioning of your worthiness and get on a roll with KNOWING it and trusting it, you will change your vibrational attraction point and you will get everything you want. How can we be so sure? Because it is the truth and the truth always feels good. #YouAreEnough

Description

"A social space that is simultaneously physical and virtual" - art critic Mary Louise Schumacher

Studio Echelman installed its largest, most interactive sculpture installation to date at the TED Conference’s 30th anniversary, March 2014. The monumental aerial sculpture spanned 745 feet between the 24-story Fairmont Waterfront and the Vancouver Convention Center, challenging the artist to work on her most ambitious scale yet - over twice the size of her largest previous sculpture.

The sculpture was presented with an original, interactive work created in collaboration with artist Aaron Koblin, Creative Director of the Data Arts Team in Google's Creative Lab. At night the sculpture came to life as visitors were able to choreograph the lighting in real time using physical gestures on their mobile devices. Vivid beams of light were projected across a massive scale as the result of small movements on spectators’ phones.

In the daytime, the sculpture’s delicate yet monumental form is subtle, blending in with clouds and sky. A complex matrix of 860,000 hand and machine-made knots and 145 miles of braided fiber weighing nearly 3,500 pounds span 745 feet to make up Skies Painted with Unnumbered Sparks.

In order to achieve such scale and complexity, Echelman turned to Autodesk, a leader in 3D design software that seeks out interesting design problems. Autodesk collaborated with Studio Echelman to create custom 3D software to model the sculpture and test its feasibility. “The software has allowed me to explore density, shape, and scale in much greater detail,” says Echelman. “We can manipulate our designs and see the results immediately. We’re able to push the boundaries of our designs further.”

Made entirely of soft fibers, the sculpture can attach directly into existing city architecture. To support the artwork across such a large span, Echelman utilized Honeywell Spectra fiber, a lightweight, durable material 15 times stronger than steel by weight. It is designed to travel to cities around the globe after the 2014 TED Conference exhibition as an “idea worth spreading.”

This project embodies the infusion of art and technology, as both continuously evolve together. “I want people to feel protected, yet linked to open sky,” says Echelman. “I hope that visitors feel more connected to those around them - to neighbors and strangers.”

The title of the sculpture, ‘Skies Painted with Unnumbered Sparks’, refers to a quotation from Shakespeare’s ‘Julius Caesar’. Through the interactive lighting component, each person can choreograph light onto the artwork and "it’s about each one of us being one of those stars – those sparks – and being able to paint the skies,” says Echelman.
